A clear, step-by-step guide to planning any trip, from picking dates and a destination to budgeting, booking and building a day-by-day itinerary.
Planning a trip can feel overwhelming, but it comes down to a handful of decisions made in the right order. Here's the process we'd use for any destination.
1. Set your dates and budget first
Everything else flows from these two numbers. Decide how many days you have and a rough total you're comfortable spending. Even a loose figure ("about a week, mid-range") is enough to steer every later choice.
2. Pick a destination that fits
Match the destination to your season and budget rather than forcing it. Not sure where? Browse destinations or settle a shortlist head-to-head, for example Bali or Goa or Tokyo or Kyoto.
3. Work out how long to stay
Big cities reward 3–4 days; sprawling regions need more. Our how many days do you need guide has quick rules of thumb.
4. Book the big rocks
Lock flights and accommodation early, they're the least flexible and usually the most expensive. See how to find cheap flights before you book.
5. Build a light day-by-day plan
Group sights by neighbourhood so you're not crisscrossing the city. Leave one thing per day flexible. Start a plan if you want days, a budget and flights from whatever you type.
6. Sort the essentials
Check visa rules, travel insurance and any vaccinations. Our visa basics and travel insurance guides cover the fundamentals.
7. Leave room to wander
The best travel memories rarely come from the itinerary. Plan enough to feel confident, then let some of it happen on its own.
