Travel Insurance Basics: What to Look For

5 min read April 2025

A simple guide to travel insurance, what it covers, when you need it, and the key things to check before you buy, without the jargon.

Travel insurance is one of those things you hope to never use and are very glad to have when you do. Here's how to think about it without drowning in fine print.

What it typically covers

  • Medical emergencies and hospital care abroad
  • Trip cancellation or interruption for covered reasons
  • Lost, delayed or stolen baggage
  • Travel delays and missed connections

When you really need it

Any international trip, anything with pre-paid non-refundable costs, and especially anything active, trekking, diving, skiing. If you're heading for the mountains, check that your policy covers your altitude and activity; our trekking guides explain why that matters.

What to check before buying

  • The medical cover limit, it should be high for international trips
  • Activity exclusions, adventure sports are often extra
  • Excess/deductible, what you pay before cover kicks in
  • Pre-existing conditions and any age limits
  • Whether it covers your most expensive electronics

A quick rule

If losing the money you've pre-paid, or facing a foreign medical bill, would genuinely hurt, insure the trip. It's usually a small fraction of the total.

This is general information, not financial advice, compare policies and read the terms for your situation. Then plan the trip itself with the planner.
