A complete Kedarkantha preparation guide: fitness plan, packing list, itinerary, best time to go, difficulty, costs and tips for India's most popular winter summit trek.
Kedarkantha is India's most beloved winter trek, a 12,500 ft summit reached through snow-laden pine forests, with a sunrise view of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch and the Gangotri range. It's beginner-friendly, but it's still a Himalayan summit in winter. Here's exactly how to prepare.
The trek at a glance
- Duration: ~6 days (including travel from Dehradun)
- Max altitude: 12,500 ft
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Best time: December to April (peak snow: Jan–Feb)
- Base village: Sankri
Fitness preparation (start 4 weeks out)
Kedarkantha is achievable for most reasonably fit people, but snow makes every step harder. Train specifically:
- Cardio: jog 5 km in under ~35 minutes, or do 45 minutes of brisk incline walking, 4× a week
- Legs: squats, lunges and step-ups, the summit day has a sustained climb and a long descent
- Back-to-back training: do two longer walks on consecutive days to simulate multi-day fatigue
- Practice with your loaded daypack so your shoulders and back are used to it
Day-by-day itinerary
- Dehradun → Sankri (long scenic drive, ~10 hrs)
- Sankri → Juda-ka-Talab, forest trail to a frozen lake campsite
- Juda-ka-Talab → Kedarkantha Base
- Summit day, pre-dawn start, summit, then descend to Sankri-side camp
- Trek down → Sankri
- Sankri → Dehradun
What to pack
Winter is the whole point of Kedarkantha, so cold-weather gear is essential:
- Trekking shoes with good grip (broken in!) + microspikes/gaiters for snow
- Layers: thermals, fleece, a heavy down/synthetic jacket, waterproof shell
- Accessories: insulated gloves, woollen cap, neck gaiter, UV sunglasses (snow glare is intense)
- Others: headlamp, 1L+ insulated water bottle, sunscreen, personal medicines
See the complete Himalayan trek packing list for the full breakdown.
Altitude and safety
At 12,500 ft, altitude is real but manageable given the gradual profile. Still:
Hydrate constantly, don't skip meals even if appetite drops, and tell your trek leader immediately if you get a persistent headache or nausea. Summit day starts before sunrise, layer up and keep moving to stay warm.
Costs
An organized Kedarkantha trek typically runs ₹8,000–₹13,000 for the on-mountain portion (guide, meals, camping, permits), plus your travel to Dehradun and any gear rental in Sankri.
