When should you trek in India? A season-by-season guide to the best time to trek the Indian Himalayas and Western Ghats, what's open, weather, and which trails to pick.
Timing is the most important decision you'll make when planning a trek in India. The same trail can be a snow wonderland, a wildflower meadow or a washed-out mud track depending on the month. Here's what each season offers.
Winter (December – February)
Winter is peak season for low-to-mid altitude snow treks. Trails below ~13,000 ft turn into pristine snowfields while higher passes close.
- Best for: Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Nag Tibba, and the surreal Chadar frozen-river trek in Ladakh
- Expect: sub-zero nights, short days, deep snow, bring serious layers
- Browse all winter treks
Spring (March – April)
As the snow melts, rhododendrons bloom and trails reopen. Skies are clear and temperatures comfortable, arguably the best all-round window.
- Best for: meadow and forest treks, early-season summits
- Browse spring treks
Summer (May – June)
When the plains are baking, the Himalayas are perfect. Higher-altitude treks and passes open up.
- Best for: Kashmir Great Lakes, high-altitude glaciers and passes
- Browse summer treks
Monsoon (July – September)
Most of the Himalayas are off-limits (landslides, leeches, washed-out trails), with two famous exceptions: the rain-shadow regions of Ladakh and Spiti, and the Valley of Flowers, which only blooms now. This is also the season for the lush Western Ghats, think Kalsubai and misty Sahyadri forts.
Autumn (September – November)
The other golden window. Post-monsoon air is crystal clear, giving the sharpest mountain views of the year before winter sets in.
- Best for: classic Himalayan treks, Sikkim and Kanchenjunga views
- Browse autumn treks
