A quick-reference guide to how long to spend in a destination, rules of thumb by city size and trip style, so you neither rush nor linger too long.
One of the most common planning questions is also one of the easiest to get wrong: how long should you stay? Too short and you rush; too long and you run out of things to do.
Rules of thumb
- Compact cities (2–3 days): enough for the highlights and one neighbourhood wander, think Amsterdam or Prague
- Major cities (3–5 days): time for landmarks, a museum or two and some local life, Paris, Tokyo, Istanbul
- City + surroundings (5–7 days): add day trips and a slower pace
- Regions and islands (7+ days): Bali or a multi-stop route need room to breathe
Adjust for your style
Fast-paced travellers see more in less time; if you like long breakfasts and aimless walks, add a day. Factor in jet lag on long-haul arrivals, see how to avoid jet lag.
Don't forget travel days
A "5-day trip" with two travel days is really three days on the ground. Count honestly.
Let the plan tell you
Sketch the must-dos, group them by area, and the right number of days usually reveals itself. Start a plan and we'll pace the days to whatever length you give.
