How to see famous places without the crush: timing, other sights, and routes that skip the longest queues.
Famous sights are famous for a reason, but nobody enjoys them shoulder-to-shoulder. A few habits give you the magic without the mob.
Time it right
- Go early or late. The first and last hours at any landmark are the quietest and the prettiest.
- Travel in the shoulder season, see best time to travel.
- Avoid weekends and local holidays at big-ticket sights.
Book ahead
Timed-entry tickets skip the worst queues and are increasingly required anyway. Reserve the marquee attractions before you go.
Choose quieter alternatives
Most iconic cities have a less-trampled twin experience nearby, a second viewpoint, a lesser-known museum, a day trip out of town. Sometimes a quieter city entirely is the answer; comparisons like Prague or Vienna help you weigh buzz against calm.
Move against the flow
When tour groups head one way, go the other. Explore neighbourhoods over landmarks for at least part of each day, it's where a place actually lives.
Let the plan spread you out
Start a plan if you want days paced so you hit the big sights when they're quieter, and fill midday elsewhere.
