How to travel carry-on only, a capsule packing list, the layering trick, toiletry rules and what to leave behind, for trips from a weekend to a month.
Travelling with only a carry-on saves money on bag fees, time at the airport and your back. The secret isn't packing less randomly, it's packing a system.
Build a capsule wardrobe
Pick a colour palette where everything mixes. For a week you rarely need more than: 4–5 tops, 2 bottoms, one layer, one jacket, underwear and socks, and one pair of versatile shoes plus the pair you wear.
The layering rule
Instead of bulky items, pack thin layers you can combine. This handles a surprising temperature range and packs flat. It's the same principle as our Himalayan trek packing list, scaled down for cities.
Toiletries that pass security
Keep liquids to 100ml containers in a clear bag. Better still, go solid, bar shampoo, solid sunscreen and toothpaste tabs sidestep the rules entirely.
Pack smart
- Roll clothes or use packing cubes to compress
- Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane
- Keep one change of clothes and essentials accessible
- Leave 10% empty for things you buy
What to leave home
"Just in case" items are what fill a bag. If you can buy it cheaply at your destination or you're unsure you'll use it, leave it. This works whether you're heading to Bangkok or Lisbon.
